In Egypt around 49 B.C., a victorious Cesare is hailed as a hero after defeating the forces of his enemy, Pompeo. Cesare intends to be merciful to Pompeo after his wife Cornelia pleads for his life, but he is too late; Tolomeo, who rules Egypt with his sister Cleopatra, has already beheaded Pompeo to show support for Cesare. Sesto, Pompeo’s son, declares that he will avenge Pompeo.

Meanwhile, Cleopatra, who is no longer content to share the crown with her brother, sees an opportunity; she aligns herself with Sesto against Tolomeo. She also wins Cesare to her side – not with political arguments, but romantic seduction – and, as with most things she sets her mind to, she is successful. However, Cleopatra falls equally for Cesare, complicating her political machinations.

As the action unfolds, love and rejection lead to betrayal for some characters, but the enduring bond between Cesare and Cleopatra ultimately allows the opera seria to resolve in a happy ending in which the lovers’ thirst for empire, and for each other, are both sated.

Composed during Handel’s London period for the Royal Academy of Music in 1724, Giulio Cesare was an immediate success with crowds. The opera was also performed in France and Germany within Handel’s lifetime. Today, Giulio Cesare is not only one of Handel’s most popular operas, but also considered one of the best serious operas of the Baroque era for its vocal writing and compelling character portraits.
